Hanwha Ocean joins FLNG project in Canada

Shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean has signed an MoU with Canadian infrastructure developer Kanata Clean to develop an FLNG export project in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Argus reported on Wednesday.

The proposed project is expected to have a capacity of up to 12 million tonnes per year (tpy) and will come at an estimated cost of USD 15.7 billion. Under the MoU, the companies will co-operate on engineering and construction of the FLNG facility and related infrastructure, as well as LNG carriers and LNG bunkering vessels.

Canada has a growing pipeline of LNG export developments. Earlier in June, Germany’s Uniper signed a letter of intent with the proposed Ksi Lisims LNG project that could lead to a binding agreement for 2 million tpy of LNG, while SEFE agreed in May to purchase 1 million tpy for up to 20 years starting in the early 2030s.

Hanwha Ocean is a South Korean shipbuilder specialising in commercial vessels, LNG carriers and offshore energy facilities. The company provides shipbuilding, offshore engineering and marine energy solutions and has expanded its capabilities in LNG-related infrastructure and floating production technologies.
